I was in high school when the first movie (strangely titled “Episode IV”) came out. Back then if you wanted to see a movie, you went to see it! There was none of this newfangled streaming over your phone…heck, we didn’t even have smartphones! And we liked it!

Anyway, that was then, this is now. Now we have little tiny X-Wings and TIE Fighters and a Millennium Falcon that we can push around on a tabletop and make “pew-pew-pew” sounds until somebody blows up.

And somebody always blows up.

Fantasy Flight Games — after securing a licensing agreement with Lucas/Disney — announced the game system in 2011. Gen Con 2012 showcased the release of the first core set which included one X-Wing (Luke!) and two Imperial TIE Fighters. The core set comes with dice, movement templates, maneuver dials, asteroids, pilot cards, upgrade cards, and a variety of tokens. I had never heard of the game until my son came home one day talking about playing Star Wars with a friend of his. He played it a number of times and then started asking if he could go up to a particular game store where they played on Wednesday nights. Hmmm, okay, I guess?

I stopped in to watch at one point. The game seemed really fiddly to me. So many moving parts, I just wasn’t interested. Little did I know.

A few years later (and many dollars of discretionary income as well) and I need a dolly to transport my X-Wing stuff to the game store (yes, the same one where my son learned to play). I have enough Imperial ships to run two simultaneous campaigns of “Heroes of the Aturi Cluster” (more on that later) so yeah, it’s a big box. I read a comment online that suggested if you spend over $250 on the game, you had a mild problem, but if you had spent more than $250 on storage for your game, then you really had a problem.

I really have a problem. 😳

A few years later and Fantasy Flight released a second core set to coincide with the release of “The Force Awakens.” It included Poe as a pilot (later upgraded in the X-Wing upgrade pack) and BB-8 as a droid.

Recently Fantasy Flight announced that version 1.0 of the game (we didn’t know it was called that, we just thought we were playing X-Wing) was going to be retired, and version 2.0 would get released in September, 2018. There have been plenty of articles written since then, but this post is supposed to be a review of the game, not a history article, so let me get to the review part.

Title: Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures Game
Players: 2
Play Time: Varies
Designer: Jason Little et al
Publisher: Fantasy Flight Games
Year: 2012

The review below is based on multiple years of experience with version 1.0. Once I have enough experience with 2.0 I will review that as a separate post.

Overview
The game supports two players (although multi-player variants are available / documented multiple places online). Each player builds a squad from a particular faction (Rebel, Imperial, Scum are the primary factions). The first part of your squad is your list of pilots; pilots are paired with ships and cannot be moved. Luke flies an X-Wing, Han files the Falcon (although Chewie and Lando are also options) and so on. There is a base cost for each pilot/ship combination as shown in some of the sample cards below.

Each pilot has a Pilot Skill (PS, in orange) which determines their movement and shooting order. (In case you’re wondering, yes, Han shoots first.) Each ship has four characteristics that designate attack strength (red), agility or evasiveness (green), hull (yellow) and shield (blue). If a ship loses all of its hull it’s destroyed. I told you something always gets blown up…

X-Wing R2-D2 Upgrade Card

On the lower-right corner of each card is a squad point cost. A typical squad offers 100 points to spend on buying pilots and upgrades. What are the upgrades? There are icons along the bottom of the card that tell you what options each pilot comes with. If you want to run the classic Luke from the movies, you’ll of course want to pair him with R2-D2. Luke costs 28 points and R2-D2 adds 4 more for a total of 32. Darth Vader on the other hand costs 29, but he’s also a higher pilot skill.

Squad building is one of the main attractions of the game for some, not so much for others. I like reading about different squads on the Internet, but I also like trying out things that could be completely crazy (and often are). For the most part though people just want to put ships on the table and make “pew-pew-pew” noises when they shoot.

Squad building is the passive part of the game. You can do it at home, or talk strategies / killer combos over with your friends. Putting the ships on the table and plotting out your movements, that’s where the interactivity comes in. There are casual games, tournament games, even a world championship if you can believe it.

Overall the game is a combination deck-building + tabletop miniatures game. It benefits / drawbacks of each of those types of games.

Components
Unlike many miniatures games the ships for X-Wing come painted out of the box. (That doesn’t stop people from re-painting them though!) The cards have a nice texture and are strong enough to stand up to use. Of course Fantasy Flight is more than willing to sell you protective sleeves in various sizes to help keep them that way. 😉 The other components are punched out of cardboard and hold up reasonably well. The one item that everybody seems to wear out is the “1-straight” maneuver template because it’s used for movement, boost, barrel roll, and even for temporarily marking a ship while someone else does a fly-by.

I think the components are good for the price. There are 3rd party replacements made out of laser-cut wood or acrylic which are really nice. You can also win officially produced alternatives if you’re good / lucky enough to win a tournament, or at least place high enough.

The one complaint I would have is the base game doesn’t have enough dice. It’s not a problem for two people to share the movement templates, but you only get 3 green (defense) and 3 red (attack) dice. At close range an X-Wing should be throwing four red dice, and at long range a TIE Fighter should be throwing four green dice. It would have been nice to see that many in the box.

Game Play / Rules / Complexity
As I’ve mentioned, squad-building is a big part of X-Wing and there are a ton of options. As I write this there have been 14 waves of ships released for version 1.0 across three (well, really five) factions. There are hundreds of different upgrade cards that interact in various ways. When something does really weird and unexpectedly powerful stuff, Fantasy Flight might issue an errata (card update) that changes the wording on the card, or even the way a ship works. The most famous of these in the early days of the game was the nerf (weakening) of the TIE Phantom. It used to be incredibly difficult to kill a Phantom so FFG changed how the de-cloaking process worked. It changed the game significantly. In the more recent years the Jumpmaster was killing everything in site, so FFG decided to completely rework the stat line for the ship. Palpatine is an example of a crew upgrade card that was changed. As an aside: it was the progression of errata that was given as a primary reason for reworking the game as 2.0.

Board Game Geek users give X-Wing a complexity rating of 2.48 / 5 but more people have weighted it a “2” than any other number. In my opinion I think it’s closer to a 3, simply because of the way the game has grown in complexity over the years.

Once you have built your squad you get to start moving ships around and shooting stuff! There are a variety of movement templates ranging from 1 to 5 in length. There are three types of movement template (straight, bank, and turn) giving you up to 11 different choices for your maneuver. The actual choices you have are limited by the pilot/ship combinations you have selected (and sometimes upgrade cards as well). You set up all of your moves in secret, before you know what you’re opponent is going to do! Anticipating your opponents moves based on his or her squad composition, current ship state (is a ship flying with just one hull left, or is it full strength…does it have an auxiliary weapon that requires it to be at a certain range…does it have a turret) or even the personality of your opponent (aggressive or cautious)…all of these things go into planning your next set of moves.

Each ship has a basic personality (TIE Fighters are fast and nimble, X-Wings a bit slower, the Falcon can turn on a dime).

TIE Fighter Maneuver Options

X-Wing Maneuver Options

Falcon Maneuver Options

Once you’ve dialed in your move and everything is ready, the ships are activated. Ships that are Pilot Skill 1 go first. The ship reveals its hidden maneuver and executes it. As long as the ship didn’t bump into another ship (or worse, an asteroid!) then they probably get to do an action. Actions include things like Focus, Evade, or Target Lock. Most ships only get one action at a time (Darth Vader’s ability is that he gets two, which doesn’t seem fair at times, but hey…evil 😈 ). As the ships complete their moves, the next level of pilot skill moves, all the way up to level 9.

Why do lower level pilots move first? Shouldn’t the better pilots get to go? It turns out it’s a real advantage to move last, because you can see everything else that has happened before you. That way you have a lot more information to help you decide what your actions are.

Oh, and the higher pilot skills get to shoot first. Han Solo is a 9. 😉 After all of the PS 9 pilots shoot it goes to 8 and 7 and so on down to 1. If any PS 1 pilot is still around at the end, even he (or she) gets to shoot. It’s a fairly elegant mechanic, and I like how it plays out in the game.

Shooting ships is done by rolling dice. My red attack dice go up against your green defense dice. If I roll more hits than you can cancel, damage occurs.

At the end of the round is the clean-up phase where you pick up expired tokens and figure out if anybody blew up or not. (Someone always blows up. Eventually.)

In a casual game, you play until you kill everything, or until you decide to quit. In a tournament game there is a specific time limit and other restrictions that I won’t bother going into here.

As fun as that sounds, it gets better. 🙂 There is a fan-made expansion for X-Wing called “Heroes of the Aturi Cluster.” It’s amazing, and I’ll have an entire series of posts just about that. For now, just know that instead of setting up ships and blowing each other up, you start as a lowly PS 2 X-Wing or Y-Wing pilot flying from a remote hidden rebel base, trying to keep the Evil Empire from taking over the Aturi Cluster. As you blow stuff up (something always blows up) you advance in pilot skill, much like leveling up in a video game.

I can’t tell you how much fun it is. Well, I can, just in another post. 😆

Experience
One of the best parts of playing at a local game store is that the X-Wing crowd — at least in my experience — is one of the friendliest groups I’ve ever experienced! That being said, I do think that the game can be fiddly to teach. It has lots of moving parts and modifiers and chained actions…a lot of stuff to keep track of. With the right coach you can pick up the game fairly quickly and be blowing stuff up in no time. Stuff always…you know it by now I guess. 😉

If you want to get deep into squad building there are a ton of resources on the Internet. You can find out which lists are winning tournaments, or maybe more importantly which ships are not winning (I’m looking at you, TIE Punisher). There are even web sites that provide statistics as to the best action to take in a specific situation. (Do I focus or target lock? My opponent has 2 green dice and an evade token. No, sorry, he has a focus token. What do I dooooo?)

If you are part of a crowd that is hard-core and you’re a casual gamer, you’re probably not going to enjoy X-Wing, or any other game for that matter. I’ve been fortunate in that I have a great group to play with, plus since I live in a major metropolitan area in the United States I actually have about a dozen game stores in my area that all sponsor X-Wing Night.

Overall Score
I love this game. At the time I am writing this post, this is one of my “desert island” games. I’ve spent hundreds of dollars on the game, more on game accessories and storage containers, and even more on accessories for fan-made expansions to the game. Even when I review stuff on Amazon I mostly put 4 stars (out of five). It’s enough to say that for a game that I initially thought looked like a waste of time has become a weekly event for me. We’ve been through the Heroes campaign three times, we’re going through Battlestar Pallas next (it’s a fan-made-expansion for a fan-made-expansion), plus we’re playing Risk Wing which is a mash-up of Diplomacy, Risk, and — of course — X-Wing.

And next month 2.0 comes out.
