Patchwork<\/figcaption><\/figure> My wife loves to quilt. That’s not normally the way I would introduce a board game post, but in this case it’s relevant. There are styles of games my wife likes to play, and styles of games she is less comfortable \/ interested in. If I can find something that she likes, the odds of being able to play it go up! It also helps if it’s short. Patchwork<\/em> fits all of those criteria. <\/p>\n

The game contents include two player boards, a dual-side score track with wooden player markers. There are several sheets of Tetris-style shapes to punch out. There are a bunch of blue buttons (in one, five, ten and twenty denominations) that are used for currency and victory points in the game. The game also includes a wooden token that designates the starting position for the first player. I love games that include wood rather than plastic!<\/p>\n

The person who has most recently used a needle goes first.<\/p>\n

Each player gets to examine the next three pieces of fabric (those geometric shapes I mentioned earlier). If you can afford to buy one (each has a button cost) then you get to evaluate which one best fills in a spot on the quilt that you are building. The goal is to fill your quilt (there is a two-point penalty for every open spot) but also to collect buttons. In our first game my wife focused almost completely on filling her board because I didn’t explain the button concept very well. I ended up winning. She then proceeded to beat me for the next four or five games in a row, although I am on a two-game winning streak at the moment.<\/p>\n

First Impression<\/strong>
\nI expected to like this game, and I do. I expected my wife to enjoy the game, and it has certainly been a hit. (It’s frequently a toss-up as to whether she will pick this or Azul<\/em> or Sagrada<\/em>, two other games we have picked up recently.) It’s easy to set up and quick to play. We both like the challenge of fitting the shapes together, and managing the button currency. I am glad this game is part of our collection.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
