Granted they are quite simple games (I have included the Board Game Geek Weight Rating on each game name) but I have still played them at least ten times. Specifically I have completed 42 (heh, I said “42”) out of an eventual 100 game plays for 2020. My best month so far was March (20 plays). The two games I have completed are both very simple, but still fun! When I put my list together I specifically put down some heavier (more complex) games like Scythe and Terraforming Mars but I didn’t want every game to be in that category. In fact I have more games rated 2 and under (6) than over (4) and I’m okay with that.

Batik

Batik is one of those simple games. It’s from a company that makes awesome wooden abstract games such as Quarto and Quoridor. (I have both of those.) The game box cover art tells you just about everything you need to know about the game. There are two pieces of clear Plexiglas held in a wooden frame. Each player has a set of geometric wooden pieces. The first player drops one of his or her pieces into the glass frame. The second player drops one of their pieces in. The player who cannot drop (not push) one of their pieces so that it is completely enclosed by the glass frame is the loser! That’s it!

My younger son and I played the game 20 or more times the first night we pulled it out. (I think he won most of them.) I managed to find a used copy of the game during a trip to Half Price Books, and it was well worth the price I paid ($9.99 after a coupon). That was the first game I completed on my 10×10, and we pulled it out occasionally in the following months as well.

Knit Wit

The next game that I have completed is called Knit Wit. Believe it or not, this game is designed by the same guy who came up with Forbidden Island, Forbidden Desert and Pandemic! It’s a fun party game that involves spools and threads and wordplay. I found a used copy in Denver and played it with my sister. She enjoyed the game, so I left it there and ordered my own copy to have at my house. 🙂

My wife and younger son sat and played a bunch of games with me last weekend. Each game only takes about ten minutes so it wasn’t a huge time committment, but the quality time was awesome!

Defenders of the Realm

The Tenth Game
I mentioned at the beginning of this post that I had initially picked only nine of my ten games. I wanted to leave one slot open for a new game that I might end up buying this year.

I love the fantasy genre. I have read fantasy novels for decades (Conan, Faffrd and the Mouser, Elric) and played Dungeons and Dragons before it was cool. 😎 A few weekends ago a gaming friend introduced me to Defenders of the Realm and that game quickly dropped into my final 10×10 Challenge spot. Why?

While the game has been around for a while (originally published in 2010) it was the first time I had been able to play it. The fantasy theme coupled with Pandemic-like mechanics made it an instant hit for me. I have already played it twice (once with a group, once solo) and enjoyed it immensely. I went to the game company web site and ordered all the parts. 😛 I’ll have another post with a First Impression of Defenders of the Realm coming up soon. For now, just know that it has filled up the final spot in my 10×10 Challenge for 2020.

We’re one third of the way through the year, and I’m 40% finished with my challenge. However I have a number of heavier games that still need attention. Will I make my goal for the year? Come back in three months for my next update. 😎

Last year I learned about something called at “10×10” or “ten-by-ten” challenge.
